Alice Umulisa is an emerging filmmaking talent from Rwanda, recognized for her dedication to
telling powerful human stories that highlight social issues, identity, and the voices of women.
With more than five years of experience in the film industry, Alice represents a new generation
of African filmmakers who combine creative passion with strong technical expertise.
Born in 2000, Alice began her journey in the film industry as an actress. However, her time on
set sparked a deep curiosity about the craft behind the camera. This curiosity quickly evolved
into a calling as she explored directing, storytelling, and editing. Through training, hands-on
experience, and masterclasses, she developed a strong foundation in filmmaking, ultimately
discovering a passion for shaping narratives through editing while continuing to direct
meaningful projects.
Alice has contributed to numerous Rwandan and international productions in roles ranging from
editor to sound editor and director. She directed the documentary Brave Mom, a film focused on
women’s empowerment in Kigali, and served as editor on several documentaries addressing
social and human stories. Her work as editor on Snow Over Kigali: An African Christmas Tale,
directed by German filmmaker Kerim Esen, further highlights her ability to collaborate on
international productions and deliver emotionally compelling narratives.
Her editing and post-production work spans multiple projects including The Camera Never Cries
by Sudanese filmmakers Abuzar Adam and Elsadig Abdelgayoum, The Bride by Myriam Birara,
Out of Cage by Liliane Umwizawase, and Not a Choice by Elizabeth Utamuriza. She also
worked in sound editing on Nyiragitwa by Fiston Mudacumura and contributed to The Clay of
Memory by Mazimpaka Jones Kennedy.
Alice’s technical expertise includes professional editing platforms such as DaVinci Resolve,
Avid Media Composer, and Adobe Premiere Pro. Her storytelling strengths lie in narrative
structure, character development, and the emotional pacing of films. In addition to her creative
skills, Alice is also trained as an intimacy coordinator, ensuring safety and professionalism for
actors during sensitive scenes on set.
Her education in Mass Communication from University of East Africa Rwanda and advanced
training, including a Documentary Masterclass and certification in Intimacy Coordination and
Safety on Set, have strengthened her ability to work confidently in professional film
environments.
Alice’s growth has also been supported through international training opportunities. She
participated in a masterclass in Kenya organized by MultiChoice Talent Factory in partnership
with GIZ, where she expanded her skills in filmmaking and on-set coordination.
Currently developing her own feature film project, I Wanna Be a Creator and Screenwriter,
Alice continues to build her voice as a storyteller dedicated to authentic and meaningful
narratives.
With her growing international experience, technical excellence, and passion for socially
conscious storytelling, Alice Umulisa is emerging as a powerful new voice in global cinema. Her
creative vision and commitment to impactful filmmaking position her as a storyteller capable of
bringing meaningful perspectives and cultural depth to the global film landscape.
