Faith-based cinema had a watershed year in 2025. What was once considered a niche genre — beloved by its dedicated audience but often overlooked by mainstream studios and distributors — announced itself to the entire film industry as one of the most commercially powerful and culturally significant forces in contemporary cinema. Box office records fell. Animated biblical epics attracted A-list talent. A new generation of faith filmmakers found their audiences and their funding. And somewhere in the middle of this extraordinary surge, an award-winning screenplay called Heroes from Heaven: Battleground Earth was quietly accumulating recognition on every inhabited continent — waiting for the industry to catch up with what its audiences already knew.

That moment has arrived.

Faith Cinema’s Breakout Year

The numbers from 2025 tell a story the industry can no longer ignore. Faith-based films did not simply survive in an era of streaming disruption and box office uncertainty — they thrived. Several of the year’s most talked-about theatrical releases were explicitly faith-driven projects that combined spiritual depth with cinematic ambition, proving once again that audiences of faith will show up in extraordinary numbers when they are given quality content that speaks to their values.

Unbreakable Boy, released on February 21, opened the year with the true and deeply moving story of a boy with autism and brittle bone disease — an inspirational film that demonstrated the power of authentic human stories rooted in faith and resilience to connect with audiences far beyond any single demographic. King of Kings, an animated feature about the life of Jesus featuring the voice talents of Oscar Isaac and Pierce Brosnan, arrived on April 11, proving that faith content could attract world-class creative talent and family audiences in equal measure. David, an animated musical exploring the life of the biblical King David, closed the year on November 21 with another reminder that the stories of scripture remain as cinematic, as dramatic, and as emotionally resonant as anything being produced in Hollywood today.

Most significantly, director Alejandro Monteverde — whose previous film Sound of Freedom became one of the most impactful and widely discussed faith-based films in recent memory — returned in 2025 with 0 A, an epic biblical thriller exploring the Massacre of the Innocents under King Herod. Monteverde’s continued commitment to ambitious, large-scale faith filmmaking, and the audience response it generated, sent a clear signal to the industry: the faith film audience is not just loyal — it is hungry for more, and it is ready for bigger stories told on a bigger canvas.

The Festival Circuit Expands

The surge in faith cinema was not confined to the multiplex. Across the festival circuit, events dedicated to faith-based storytelling grew in both number and prestige throughout 2025. The Faith in Film International Film Festival, hosted in historic downtown Tucson, Arizona, continued to serve as one of the most respected boutique platforms for Christian and faith-based stories from around the world — a festival that combines screenings with a screenwriting competition specifically designed to surface and reward the next generation of faith storytellers.

These festival spaces matter enormously. They are where faith audiences discover new voices, where industry professionals identify emerging projects with commercial potential, and where screenwriters receive the recognition and validation that moves their work one step closer to production. It is within this expanding festival ecosystem that Heroes from Heaven: Battleground Earth has built one of the most remarkable records in independent faith cinema.

Where Heroes from Heaven Stands

Against this backdrop of a surging faith film market, Heroes from Heaven: Battleground Earth has spent the past two years building a record of international recognition that is, quite simply, without precedent for an unproduced faith-based screenplay.

The project has now been honored or recognized at more than 30 international festivals and screenwriting competitions spanning every inhabited continent — earning awards including Best Feature Screenplay at the Greece International Film Festival, Best Unproduced Script — Action at the Madrid International Film Festival, Best Drama Script at the World Film Festival in Cannes, Outstanding Achievement in Feature Script at the London Independent Film Festival, three category wins at the All Asian Independent Film Festival in Cambodia (Best Thriller Screenplay, Best Action Screenplay, and Best Original Screenplay), a Special Award for Best Screenwriting at the Eastern Europe Film Festival in Romania, the Best First Time Screenplay win at the Rome Indie Film Festival, and Official Selections at events ranging from the New York Film Festival to the All African Independent Film Festival in Kigali, Rwanda.

Most recently, the screenplay advanced to the Quarter Finals of the Faith in Film International Film Festival and Screenwriting Competition in 2026 — a recognition that comes at exactly the right moment, as the faith film industry has never been better positioned to support and distribute a project of this scope and ambition.

The Story

Heroes from Heaven: Battleground Earth is a faith-based action epic set in a dystopian future following the Great Holy War of 2058, in which the world has been divided into seven reimagined continents, each governed by a leader embodying one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Religious practice is a capital offense. Believers are imprisoned in Hate Camps and used as slave labor, unknowingly digging above the buried Garden of Eden itself.

At the center of this fallen world is LacHain — the reluctant leader of the UnderLand, formerly known as Australia — whose awakening to faith, execution, and resurrection by Jesus Christ launches one of the most ambitious faith-based action narratives ever committed to screenplay form. Hidden among the enslaved faithful are the ancient biblical warriors Samson, Abraham, Lazarus, Moses, David, and Mary Magdalene — waiting for this moment to reveal themselves and join the fight.

Designed as a two-feature cinematic event, Heroes from Heaven is the kind of story that the 2025 faith film market has been building toward — a film that combines the spiritual power of The Passion of the Christ with the ensemble-action scale of Gladiator and the mythological world-building of Black Panther. It is a story for the global faith audience and the global action audience in equal measure.

The Moment Has Come

The faith film industry produced some of its greatest commercial and creative successes in 2025. Audiences showed up. Studios paid attention. The festival circuit expanded. And the evidence from every inhabited continent confirms that Heroes from Heaven: Battleground Earth is the kind of project this market has been waiting for.

The screenplay is complete. The novel is written. Thirty international festivals have already said yes.

Now it is time to make the film.
